Adele Parks

Adele Parks is the author of Playing Away, Game Over, Larger Than Life, The Other Woman's Shoes, Still Thinking Of You, Husbands and now, Young Wives Tales. Her latest book Tell Me Something is on sale now. Adele, who has wanted to be a writer since she was a little girl, lives with her husband and son in Guildford, Surrey. They are, in her opinion, the most enchanting beings on the planet.

Envisage yourself as an animal, which one would it be and why?

Lioness. Social, stoical, strong, sleepy. What's there not to love.
Also, I like the fact that they are so protective of their young.

Describe your writing style in one sentence

Clever, honest, thought provoking and funny - hopefully!

Without the rude bits, describe your typical writing day

It's pretty standard. 8.30- 4 at the computer. I'm incredibly disciplined, always have been always will be. I feel guilty if I'm not busy. I wish there were more rude bits but it's a myth that writers float around in scanty panties and drink champagne from their lovers' navels all day. At least, I hope it's a myth or else I'm missing out - big time.

Ice Cream, chocolate or both?

Chocolate, but it's a tough choice.

Reality TV. or a good thought- provoking documentary?

I HATE HATE HATE reality TV. It's a scourge (see my novel GAME OVER). A good thought- provoking documentary without doubt. But in case you are worried that I'm too sensible for my own good, I ought to add that I adore Coronation Street and I read Heat.

What did you do to get published in the first place?

I was totally, totally committed to it. I wanted to be published more than anything else in my life and I'd wanted it all my life.

How long did it take to get a publishing deal after you bagged an agent?

A week. I know I'm sickening. But the good news is it shows it can happen.

Can you remember anything remotely embarrassing about your very first book signing?

Not my first book signing but my first in my home town where lots of lovely friends and family came to wish me well, including my old headmaster. He said he really liked my work, which I was thrilled about but I was mortified to think he had read my graphic descriptions of sex. I've since got used to the idea that so has my Gran, my dad's friend's at the golf club and even some of the women my mum goes to church with. Mortifying, they thought I was such a nice girl!

And the best thing about being a published writer is? (Feel free to be totally fickle and materialistic here)

Being my own boss. Not having to commute. Living in a fantasy world and people allowing it to be legitimate. It's great. I wish you all well in getting published.

Much Appreciated !
